Dare Education Foundation

Established in 2002, The Dare Education Foundation (DEF) is an educational non-profit dedicated to supporting the students, teachers and schools of Dare County. We are a collective group of stakeholders working together to enhance the education of our Outer Banks Community. DEF offers grant cycles for schools, funding support for teachers seeking higher education opportunities and scholarships for students. A significant aspect of DEF's impact involves our teacher housing complexes, offering 36 affordable housing units for local educators at a below market rate. DEF constantly seeks additional support opportunities to offer supplemental materials and resources for our local students. Spurred by a collective sense of urgency and shared responsibility, our work inspires our community to join together in a shared belief that by supporting our schools, we are DEFining our future.

Outer Banks Relief Foundation

In 2004 a group of people on the Outer Banks raised money for leukemia research in honor of a local child battling the disease. This family became financially distressed during their crisis and they lost their home. The original group of fundraisers founded the Relief Foundation to prevent other local families from facing a similar situation. Since that time, the Outer Banks Relief Foundation has provided over $1,960,000 to 1018 Outer Banks families in need. Financial assistance is given in the form of mortgage or rent payments, utility bill payments and payment of other critical household bills in amounts generally ranging from $500 to $2,000. Some examples of what our clients are facing include cancer, serious blood or nerve disorders, spinal injuries, and multiple sclerosis. We work closely with the other charitable and helping organizations here on the Outer Bank and with regional, state and national organizations to coordinate and maximize support.
